Sociologist, Max Weber,

Sociologist, Max Weber,
Weber (pronounced Vayber) said there were 3 dimensions of social class.: power, property and prestige.

Apply Weber's Model To Real Life!

Weber identified three components of social class, what sociologists now call "The 3 Ps", power, prestige and property. According to this model, upward social mobility, or moving up the social ladder, is possible if a person can acquire one of these.

Singer, Beyonce is a good example. Her fame is a form of prestige, which allowed her to acquire property or wealth, thus moving her from a lower to higher social position.

Another example is Mayor Bloomberg. As a CEO, Bloomberg had significant wealth or property, which he was able to convert into political power when he was elected Mayor of NYC.

Former vice presidential candidate and governor of Alaska, Sarah Palin, is an example of someone transforming political power to property (wealth).

Weber's 3 Ps and the College Student

Getting a college degree is also a form of prestige. This can help many people earn more income, or property, thus raising them from a lower to a higher social position.
